Design Thinking, Bakrie University Management Featured Material
Design Thinking is one of the superior lecture materials studied in the Bakrie University Management Study Program. Bakrie University's Management Study Program is the only department that applies learning the science of Design Thinking, you know!
Whatis Design Thinking is?
The definition of Design Thinking according to “Interaction Design Foundation” is an iterative process that someone carries out to understand the user. In practice, various processes also occur, such as questioning assumptions, reinterpreting the context of problems in an effort to create strategies and turn them into solutions.
Well, this Design thinking process includes context analysis in the context of discovering and framing complex problems. This process will make someone question problems, assumptions, and relationships.
Furthermore, analysis of the problem will encourage someone to create ideas and solutions using a creative way of thinking which is familiarly known as brainstorming.
The Design Thinking process also involves someone experimenting to create sketches, models or prototypes, testing and evaluating. Later, these modeling media will be tested and evaluated.
Stages of Design Thinking
1. Empathize
Yep, the first stage of Design Thinking starts with gaining an empathetic understanding of the problem that is being solved. This process allows design thinkers to set aside personal assumptions in an effort to gain insight into users and their needs. This process is usually carried out by collecting information such as interviews.
In more detail, empathy is done in three ways, namely observe, engage, and immerse. Observe is done by observing the user's problems when working through expressions, gestures or words. Engage is interacting with a discussion with several other users regarding the same issue. Immerse is done through one's own experience, namely positioning oneself in that context so that you know the problem.
2. Define
The second stage is Define. In this stage, a design thinker can collect information that has been collected in the Empathize stage.
At this stage the process of identifying the main problem occurs. Based on the data we have obtained from the empathize stage, we can begin to define insights and the problem patterns that emerge.
This stage will help design thinkers create features and functions that make it possible to fix problems, or at least help users solve their own problems.
3. Ideate
Well, the third stage in the process of Design Thinking is ideate or the stage of starting to generate ideas. At this stage, design thinkers will create a mind-map to think about proposed solutions to deal with existing problems.
At the end of this stage, design thinkers must choose other ideation techniques to make it easier to research and test ideas, so they can find the best way to solve problems or provide things to anticipate failure.
4. Prototype
At this stage, the design thinker will visualize the selected solution in its real or miniature form in order to find out whether the existing solution can solve the user's problem. Well, this is known as prototyping.
This process helps the visual representation of the solution to become concrete and perceivable. In this process, ideas will be made into reality. The Prototypethat is created does not have to be perfect, because it will betestedand will be improved continuously.
By the end of this stage, design thinkers will have a better idea of the product's constraints and problems, as well as a clearer view of how users should act and think.
5. Test
The final stage in the Design Thinking process is Test. Design thinkers rigorously test all products using identified best solutions.
The prototype that has been created is tested to get feedback regarding the solution created. Tests are carried out to check whether the solution provided really answers the user's needs. Various types of testing can be done to get real feedback .
Even at this stage, changes and improvements are made to eliminate problem solutions and gain a deep understanding of the product and its users.
Why Should Design Thinking?
In the business world, Design Thinking has been used by many companies around the world such as Apple, Samsung, Google, Nike to develop products, services, work processes and business models. Because the process is proven to be able to produce innovation, isout of the box, and profitable from a business perspective.
Based on research from Mc Kinsey&Company, companies that consistently implement Design Thinking experience intensive revenue growth of 10% compared to the company average of 3-6% throughout 2018-2022.
Design Thinking uses a human-centered approach (human centered design), because the focus is on helping customers solve their problems and achieve their desired goals. This is what makes it different from other approaches based on technology and competitors.
